PA Hire

It has been a while since my last post. I have just built a Pa system with lights and a truck. I used to have a similar system in the late 80’s and toured extensively with it. I have always been dissapointed with the lack of overall experience some companies have with live sound reinforcement, especially when it comes to guitar bands. There never seems to be enough compressors or foldback sends, nor do many sound companies have compression on foldback. I DO. I have a double 3 way composite FOH speaker system boasting 10,000 watts with single 3 way delay stacks, DBX drive rack processors, 8 sends of foldback, martin-type wedges, P-audio wedges, 650 watt each active sidefills, Rinkus heinz drum fill, Soundcraft 24-8 foldback desk, 32-8-2 Soundtracks topaz FOH desk, 16 channel mic splitter for recording, FOH rack with gates, 2 stereo reverbs, 10 compressors, 1 digital delay and of course lots of mics. I have 2 spare FOH desks including a vintage tascam 24 channel studio desk. The desk sounds better than the topaz. It is 2o years old, has spent all its life in a home studio, hardly used, made in japan with some serious electronics going on inside. Steve Scanlon: Vanessa Amourossi’s sound guy used to have one. He used to hire my pa off me less the 400b soundcraft I had and it sounded so clean. You cannot beat these old desks. The foldback is 6,600 watts with compression and feedback suppression. ART HD graphics and a soundcraft  24-8 send make up the front end. I have a very basic 16 can par56 light show at the moment and will be adding 6x par64 led washes, some dmx scanners and some effect lights next month. The mic case is full of 57’s, 58’s, Sennheiser 609’s, Akg condensors and some rhode overheads (matched pair). The foldback system can be split up to make 3 small vocal pa’s with an 8 can static light show. I have theatre blacks that can cover 12meters of stage and the front foldback line. The DBX processors really make the system hum. I still have a stereo graphic over the main desk output just in case it goes pairshaped. I have been looking around at some new active systems and really couldn’t see a difference sonically for the money. For the extra 10 minutes to unload the truck with another two amp racks, give me passive boxes. For what one wedge costs I can buy two good passive wedges and run them off one side of a QSC. Passive wedges bounce when roadies drop them. The truck is a recoed Isuzu NPR300 3.9 liter diesel with 2 hydrogen fuel cells. I will get 180 more kms out of a tank of diesel on a long trip with the hydrogen cells. $500 for the cells and 1 day to install them. Not bad. Cheaper than a gas conversion. The motor runs  quieter and cooler with the hydrogen mix.I sold my protools hd system and opted for a quadcore and LE. It sounds the same and left me with a pile of change. I think that anyone recording at home need not waste money on protools hd unless they have a bottomless pit of money and talent. One can get more out of a mac quadcore with logic studio than protools with a massive pac. You still have to spend about 4 grand more on plugins to make the system work properly to compete with the big guys. It is cheaper to give it to someone to mix who has has already spent the money and has a good analog desk. I don’t care what anyone says. You can’t get a good mix out of the box.  My system would be perfect for small to medium dance parties and can be used for outdoor events. The stacks have been rained and hailed on and can withstand any punishment you can dish up. The boxes are built like a tank and sound fantastic. Contact me on 0438566178 for all Pa and mixing enquiries.

I found this potentially huge band on myspace. I am re-mixing a track for them Rincon-style. They are fat and recorded their stuff at home on Cakewalk. THey get about 900 hits a day. There is something in that. I am also giving the singer my ninja singing cd. In three months he will be much stronger and their new material will be better for it.

There are some fantastic bands out there in myspace land. Not too many I am afraid from Australia. Most of you are over cooked, over tuned rubbish. It took Ricon 5 years to get to where they are. They are nearly the tightest band in Australia and Jeremy is fast becoming one of the best live singers as well. Yep, in the realm of Dead Letter Circus and Butterfly effect.

Stopped in on my buddies DORAMAH while they were tracking drums and bass for their next album. Gav is a bloody machine and could play anything dished up by any band. Jeremy and Kris, I am looking forward to doing the vocal session with you. It will be fun.

Check out Saving one too. Watch as these guys grow in to something special. With some guidance these guys couls be rather large.

Yeh Jules!

While all these people are out there protecting their asses and kissing other ones at the same time they are contributing to the decimation and indoctrination of youth music culture. One good thing about getting older is you get better and are less likely to be sucked up into the vacuum of popular music. One bad thing though is people stop listening to you.

Screw you…….You youngies that think you know what music is are deafening yourself with your Ipods and Mp3’s. There lieth the problem. How can you say what is good or not when the quality of your audio is governed by the bit rate you pirated the tracks at. I doubt that 50% of you have ever purchased a cd in your life. I am not here to critisize you. I set this site up to teach people the difference between good singers and bad ones. I want you all to understand that you are being coned into believing  that our  pop stars can actually sing live. 99% of them cannot. Most bands cannot do it live either.

Chris Cornell is a classic example of a singer under pressure. He has so much autotune on his voice, and it has been tweaked beyond human endurance that he cannot make it past one gig to the next without sounding like crap. A guy I know says that Chris is the best Rock singer. Said by a guy who sings in the worst duo act in Australia, singing Chris Cornell covers without any tone or fell or all the things it takes to actually sing a song. Sorry man, I am not convinced. I don’t think you have the musical knowledge or experience to make such a statement. I gave you exersizes to do so your singing would get better, but you didn’t do them. I charge hundreds of dollars for these lessons and get awesome results and you in your infinite musical wisdom fob me off. I should have charged you rather than help you.I don’t mind naming you either. Mitch Smith, you cannot sing. You will never be able to sing properly. You cannot hold a simple note in tune. You sing with your mouth closed and try to cover your bad singing up with reverb. You can’t even hear the note and what makes things worse you do not realise that this is the reason why no one comes to see you play except for your few friends and family, oh yeh and the guy who can’t play guitar that backs you might have fallen off his bike a few times too many and damaged that thing called ABILITY.

You can’t sing Chris Cornell. He can’t even sing Chris Cornell 90% of the time. Stop poisoning the population of the Bright Brewery with your bad voice and bad guitar playing. Do the excersizes for christ sake. You will get better if you can get past your ego. What you are singing took weeks and weeks of editing. Cornell cant sing that good live. You are either brave or stupid to think you can pull it off. I sat through the first bracket because I did not want to insult you. This is no insult what I am saying .I am just sick of people sucking up resources and calling what they do entertainment. When I start playing again You will see what real live singing is all about. I still practice every day. Anyway, enough of Mitch and his mate.

I was supposed to publish this months ago. Here it is out of context. I stil feel the same way. Any singers that need help contact me through myspace/biggermusicproductions and I will sort you out. Some asshole is spamming me about 70 times a day so until I get it sorted thats the way it has to be sorry.

Howdy yall,

Yes, Rincon and Tenth Planet will be rocking all you motor bike heads soon with the Hell’s Gate Enduro dvd by the guy that gives us all the Redbull motor bike dvd’s:

-Last Man Standing

-Pastrana’s Baja diaries.

Rincon are kicking ass overseas with placements as are some of the other bands I place music for. Is your publisher sitting on his fat ass doing nothing with your product? Send me a cd, well recorded and produced and I will appraise it and let you know what I can do. Or just email Rincon and ask them what I have done. It is easy when you have great product, hard if it is shit and I will not push shit.

Mediocre Idol

Well, I have to say that this will definitely be the last year Idol will hit our screens. With all the respect in the world to Marcia, what a pathetic bunch of so-called singers we have before us. No character, no balls, no looks. This show shits me to tears.

As Nigel explained So you think you can dance is an entertainment show for people to be entertained. Idol is the same. Don’t take yourselves seriously because you are all plain crap. Most of you sound like your singing teacher and by the end of the show you will all sound like last years drivel served up with a different haircut. I have not met one singing teacher that can drag out of a singer the gold. You all have your heads up your asses and charge way too much. I have taught people who can’t sing to save themselves and now they would shit on any idol contestant. Six months is all it takes to get a novice to sing like a pro. I have proven it time and time again and my students all sound different, have massive range and a confidence only found from putting in extremely hard yards.

I must say Damien from last year is a nice singer. Great tone, note perfect, loads of character.

Back to Idol. All you wannabe’s, the deathnell is sounding on pop music. You will sell nothing. Hiphop and alternative rock is where it’s at and unless you want to help piracy, when the time comes to chose songs, for christ sake chose something with big guitars and balls or else your two minutes of fame will be flushed down the toilet thanks to A and R people who have no idea……..Yes Sony BMG……You a&r dickheads are the reason why the music industry is fucked…..You do not know what people want. You think you do but you don’t and I am glad I don’t have anything to do with you. I supply many companies overseas with content from here, USA and Canada and it works. Rincon for example are the most played and requested band on Redbull productions in Europe and the US. You dickheads have not even heard of them……I would like to see you justify your overpaid salaries with the shit you have dished up in the last 12 months.

Like me or hate I speak the truth because I can sing better than any of  the idol contestants and if any of them want some REAL coaching, go to www.myspace.com/stuartbiggins and become my friend. Piss off your singing teacher. They are ripping you off. Stop supporting mediocrity. I have never met anyone under 20 years old that can really sing. You have to have your heart broken a few times before you get a soul. Dicko, I thought you had some musical integrity. You are just a tv personality now and have no credibility whatsoever. You don’t know what we want so why dont you bugger off back to your rainy little hole you call home. Australia has more than enough fat, opinionated, washed up, ex record company wankers. You are leaving a massive carbon footprint here and need to move on, buy some realestate, trade shares but for christ’s sake stop perpetuating this stupid show about mediocrity. I didn’t see you at the last Mammal gig. I did not see you at the last Dead Letter Circus gig and I certainly won’t see you at the Alter bridge gig. You wouldn’t even know who they are. Chris Cornell kneels before the singer of Alterbridge. You need to stop making out you know whats going on in the world of music and leave it to the people who are in the thick of it. You have not taste. You are really just a marketing guy. When I get my tv show out of the ground I will sow you real music, real bands, real singers, not the shit you are involved in.

I have nothing more to say on this topic for now so to my few friends who tune in to this site from time to time I hope I speak for all of you and hope to post more ofte. It is bloody hard sometimes to get the time but it feels good to vent….hahahah

I keep getting spammed….80 times plus a day so the best place to message me is on myspace until I get it sorted. I will not respond to anything for the next week or so.

Three bands to look out for….Tenth planet, Seventh Seal, My motive…Great bands….Great songs and great live. You idol wankers have so much to learn. Rock is king and always will be.

Harpertown

Mitch and Brendon Harper have started the enduro season with a big bang last weekend at Warrigul. I used to live near Warrigul, but the vent was frought with controversy with a streaker running across the finish line during Brendons last loop and problems with the electronic transponders.

I will post the results tomorrow night.

They both Ride Yamaha YZ 250 F’s out of choice not because they are sponsored(although a couple of consignment bikes wouldn’t go a stray) and will be a force to be reckoned with this year.

So you think you can sing

Filed Under Singing Lessons | 2 Comments

I would love to have a show that exposes all the crap and mediocrity in the pop industry. I would start at the singer.

We all know that a great singer can endure anything, and can stand the test of time. Some people can tell when a singer has been doctored to the point of artistic anihilation. I doubt that anyone fitting this description would ever come to this site so I am safe for now. I have some great stories and will show you all some sad examples of singers that are so doctored in the studio that you would sue the promoter if you ever paid to see them live. I have worked with the most prolific pop producers in the country and I see entire vocal performances being made up by 30 takes all chopped up to make one good one. Sometimes cut up and joined syllable by syllable. You are all being conned into thinking these people can sing. It is no wonder no one buys music anymore. It is just not worth it.
Most people couldn’t care less. I couldn’t most of the time but I am getting sick of mediocrity in this country. There are some awesome singers like Kim from Dead Letter Circus, Kenny from Karnivool, the guy from Thirsty Merc. Nearly all the Australian Idol singers are complete crap. Millsy……..absolute crap. Cannot sing a bloody note. Nice guy though. The girls are great. Paulini, Kate and I cannot remember the other names but they can sing. Anthony Calea can sing really well but nobody likes him. Nobody likes working with him. He is such a primadonna. His nickname is “The angry Dwarf”. I laughed when I was told that’s what the Idol crew called him. Good luck to him.

As for the indy industry, it doesn’t matter if you can or can’t sing. 99% of you will fail anyway and if you do not have a good manager or half a brain and you ARE good you will anyway. The key to every successful band is at least two brains: a  manager who knows people who can tell him what they really think of the band and one band member that can translate that into simple band language. Sometimes it is not worth punishing punters with awful noise and poorly structured songs. Bands need to ask people in the crowd what they really thought of the band and the songs and what they can do to make them better.  FADING HOUR are a classic example of a band that should not go on any longer punishing people who pay to see the main act. The last time you played it was total crap. Not one song, not one sound you could call a real song. For the good of the industry please, on behalf of the 1,500 people that have been bored to tears and brought to the brink of phsical illness in 2007 STOP STOP STOP. There….. I said it.  I know you guys enjoy playing to your friends but you are sucking up resources for people who have talent. Stick to plumbing and tiling. Trust me, you will make more money and the music industrywill not miss you.

It is about time bands producers and the public were honest with themselves and started writing the truth about their myspace friends. I see so many”wow, what a great gig. You guys were awesome”. I was at the gig. It was crap. The problem we all face now though is that most record companies are run by accountants with no taste in even the basic of human needs and have replaced great songs and singers with mediocrity. There is no longer a benchmark unless Vanessa Amourossi releases a new song or ALTER BRIDGE, SHINEDOWN or ARMY OF ANYONE raise the bar a few notches. Wake up Australia. Wake up record companies and see that you are killing us with the rubbish you dish up .We will not buy it. I wouldn’t even produce it. Couldn’t put my name on it. It is shallow, pathetic and demeaning. Thank you Bill Gates for the internet and I curse ANTARES for Auto tune. Wow……. Two glasses of whine and look what happens to me. Come on….Give me some feed back……..Lets start a revolution…. No more pop…. Turn off your radios….Go out and see a band… If you don’t like them , tell them, ask for your money back…Bring back the benchmark.

When you do to my myspace site you will notice I only have 136 friends. This is because they all, except for a couple of motorbikenutters, three crackheads and a stripper, are all great musicians. I have never met sting. That was after three wines and after being on a friends site talking how he just toured with him and that he was a very humble guy. The Aussie bands I know I have something to do with in some small way are there because I have seen them and they have talent. Rincon, my favorite, are by far the most talented guys. Given the right push, they could be great if only there wasn’t so much shit  out there that people waste their time on.

I’m going to bed. I am pissed off…………………. Good night

How are the heads sunday? How was your ride today lloydy? Good to hear your boy nailed the 100 footer. Can’t wait to get you guys up here. HARPER TOWN AWAITS THEE. YEEEEEHHHHHHHHHH. You are a mad bastard LLoydy. I will make sure I tee up with the band on saturday night for you and I to sing our songs. You do DANCE TONIGHT and I will do the SHANNON NOLL one. Don’t Laugh everyone I met him once when I was recording back up vocals on a song on his first album. Don’t believe me? Check out the credits. Learn to fly: BV’s Stuart Biggins and another two tracks and his second album 1 or two tracks. It was fun and the guy can actually sing well. GO SHANNON. You should be singing METAL though.

You are going to have a ball up here Troy. The riding is phenomenal now after all the rain we have had. Bring plenty of tearoffs and put in super heavy duty tubes. You will get a good picture of what we can do up here and when you see the downhill mountain bike track You will have to assist in convincing Yamaha to go ahead and make their downhill bike a production reality.

Riding with the boys

Filed Under Music Production | Leave a Comment

I went for a ride on my wr 450 this afternoon to “HARPER TOWN” to see what Lincoln and the boys were up to. I havn’t ridden much the last three months due to a broken thumb and having the wind taken out of my sails after the last crash I had.

It was great to see Linc, Scott, Glen, Luke, Tom and the other guys tearing up the supercross track. I met Lincoln’s cosin. A really nice guy and bloody good rider too. I was merely a spectator and am looking forward to the guys teaching me how to rip up their back yard. I feel sorry for anyone living in the city, sucking up smoke and having to battle traffic. We have it so good here.

I spoke with Luke about our concept show. He is from Western Australia. A very interesting guy with a very interesting family. Without going in too much detail Luke is about as full on as you can get motorsports-wise. He rides a Kawasaki KX450 and drives an EVOLUTION 8 MItsubishi. His partner is just as full-on. Come on girls….. You all need to learn something from women like this. Ssshe is also a demon on a quad bike and is one of the fastest people in a go-kart I was told. Faster than most guys on a track. I want to see this…….I will organise a kart race and will post the results in weeks to come with a sall video. I will put the video probably on the GONE website when it is up in a few weeks.

Lincon will be the mountain and downhill biking host on the show and will take us on some amazing tracks: man made and natural. He has a group of equally talented riders that will push their bodies and levels of indurance to breaking point. I have been getting fit so I can at least keep up part of the way.

It was a bit surreal at the track, standing taiking to the guys about stuff while Glen Clarke was jumping  not 2 metres away 20 foot in the air, nailing the landing and then powering out. The best part was seeing Mt Feathertop in the background amongst the flurry of dirt. In his day Clarkie was the most promising junior rider in the country. His family are awesome people. He has two othe brothers; one is now an A Grade motorcross contender. With the right training he will be the best in Australia and could be world class.

Brendon and Mitch are racing an enduro near Warrigul this weekend. I wonder how they are going?

JUst got a text from Troy Bondini and King LLoydy thinking of names for the show. You guys are mad. After the four day enduro we get into filming the motorbike and downhill bike part of the pilot. Linc and his team have made a track in a secret location and will take us through their paces. Can’t wait to get that on film.

Got some great footage of Brendon and Doctor Feltrin tearing up the bitumen on their Aprilia motards. Brendon left the road on a 40 km  corner, got the aprilia back wheel completely perpendicular and powered up speedway-styles at 100 km/h through the corner throwing stones all over me and Mark. Such a good rider. So much control and total lack of personal welfare. I love it. We should all live our lives out on the edge but it is just as well you don’t otherwise we wouldn’t be making this show.

Laura and I are going to a factory that makes parachutes and we are going to be taught how to skydive. She doesn’t know it yet so when she reads this she will either be really happy or smething else. I hope she feels like me and relishes the thought of pushing the absolute limit of mental strenght. A walk in the park I say. It will make good tv as both of us are nearly fearless. HAHAHAH ( Not completely)
